Margaret Braxl Ryan was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 23, 1925, the fifth of seven children to Frank and Matilda Braxl. She was baptized Marguerite Louise but an error on her birth certificate made her Margaret. She was known by “Babe” and predeceased by each of her loved siblings, Olga (George) McGowan, Frank (Floss/ Edie) Braxl, Otto (Marion) Braxl, John (Marge), Eddie (Marge) Braxl, Bubbles (Ed) Pettit. Margaret attended St. Catherine of Genoa Elementary School and graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn. She became the youngest manager of Ebinger’s Bakery. Margaret met James Thomas Ryan through friends and they had their first date at the Paramount in Brooklyn on Dec 6, 1948 seeing “Pale Face”, and the rest became their history. Jim married “Babe/Marge” on October 2, 1949 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. They lived with her parents until they bought their brand new home in Valley Stream on Dec 2, 1949 where she lived for 73 years. She became known as “Mom” when they welcomed Jimmy on Sept 15, 1950, Peggy on Dec 2, 1952 and Valerie on March 30, 1955. She loved her children, cooking, cleaning her home, and decorating for every holiday. Every Sunday was a visit with her siblings, beloved Ryan in-laws, and some of her 33 nieces and nephews. Known as “Aunt Babe, Aunt Margie, or Aunt Marguerite” - she was a favorite. She was a Cub Scout Leader, Rosary Society Member, and founding member of Blessed Sacrament Parish, where she made friendships that lasted 70 years. She enjoyed weekly card games with the girls that included her pals, Ann Hess and Ann Luby, as well as many couples’ basement parties and vacations, including trips to The Canadian Rockies, Hawaii, Europe, Sea Isle City, and Woodloch Pines. She joined her Everbest Bakery family in 1964 and worked there diligently for 34 years, packing things to perfection, greeting customers with her vibrant smile, and never letting a broken cookie go to waste. In her few hours of relaxation, she read The Daily News, completed her Jumbles, and never missed Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Dancing with the Stars, or the Bachelorette. Home Goods will also miss her. After she retired from Everbest at the age of 74, she spent more years entertaining as “Grandma” to her seven grandchildren, Michael (Denise), Greg and Chris (Jen) Radicone, Danny (Holly) and Alicia Ryan, John (Danielle Blatchley) and Brian Barcheski. Her “In-Laws” Mike Radicone and Maureen Ryan were additional loves of her life - to them she was “Mom”. She was “Gigi Ma” to her five great grandchildren, Ryan, Emily and Brendan Radicone, Mallory and Elle Barcheski. She celebrated 61 years of true love with her husband Jim and was predeceased by her children Jimmy and Peggy (Radicone). While she mourned them with faith, she lived by the belief that “Life was for the Living”, a belief that drove her to celebrate her 85th birthday in Germany, her 90th in Las Vegas, and to be present in Los Angeles in 2018 to meet her 4th great-grandchild at age 93 with Valerie Ryan Barcheski. Her life was well lived, her love well shared. Her smile was radiant, and her laugh infectious. Her ability to make us all feel special is her legacy, and her legacy will endure for many generations to come.
